Bob’s Famous Foodmart and Discount Liquors has its origins back to 1955, when Bob DiMatteo started the store with his parents, Dominic and Mary DiMatteo. It was the day after Mother’s Day and Bob claimed he gave his mother a “Mother’s Day present she would never forget”. Bob’s Famous Foodmart remains a family enterprise. Bob’s son, Ron DiMatteo, is now the co-owner along with George Mather, Jr. Bob’s wife, Joan DiMatteo , still runs the gift card section of the store. With social media growing beyond belief, the greeting card section has been reduced, giving “Joanie” some well-deserved time off. Her time at Bob’s Famous Foodmart is better spent as a marketing consultant, historical advisor, public relations, and overall quality control.
We are ready to spice things up for the holidays with the newest addition to the Shipyard lineup, GingerBreadHead. Before we get to the beer tasting, a brief history of spiced beer is in order!
Herbs and spices have a long standing history in the world of beer making and they actually pre-date the most common spice used in brewing today, hops. The history of beer and the history of the spice trade fall into step around 3000 BC – a time when beer production was well established and the Arab spice traders could readily provide herbs, fruits, berries, honey and gruit to season beer.
The addition of spices in the beer making process is a longstanding tradition for dual purposes. It was thought that they helped to preserve the beer, though to a much more limited extent than hops do today.
